ADDING VALUE TO MEETINGS: Get Women to Contribute

I received a Harvard Business School tip a few months ago which has stuck with me for some time now.  I do a lot of work in helping organizations maximize performance of their people.  Often, leveraging diversity has been a barrier.  People often resist outside input or just fail to consider additional perspectives.

As a leader, we have more control than we realize. As we’ve heard in the movies, …with power comes great responsibility.

Leaders are always on stage. People are following your lead. They are learning from you. People join companies and leave their managers. This post I found to be quite telling.

Organizations want their people to be more productive, but discovering innovative approaches is often challenging. Consider the Howard Gardner’s multiple intelligences. As an example, one innovative approach to creativity is to spend time looking at nature. Bring your group outdoors or take a personal break.

There is evidence that looking at green objects– through a window, on a walk outside, or even on a screen saver – can help improve attention and performance in the workplace.

Leadership Strategies: Speakers Avoid the 3 B’s

Early in my speaking and management career, my mentor introduced me to this lesson. I learned it a few times the hard way and again in Toastmasters. Remember, speakers are leaders. A leader is constantly working to build trust and maintain credibility. I apply public speaking skills when I am engaged in strategic planning, change management, performance consulting, corporate training, etc.

Therefore, it is important to avoid controversy and keep a neutral stance when delivering a program. This contributes to a safe environment that allows participants to remain fully focused.
